AIADMK asks EC to ensure violence-free Thirumangalam by-poll

Fearing violence in the bye-election to Thirumangalam assembly constituency in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK on Friday demanded that the Election Commission should take adequate measures to ensure free and fair polling on January 9.

An AIADMK delegation met Election Commissioner Navin Chawla and submitted a memorandum which said it apprehended "large-scale poll violations" by the ruling DMK in the constituency.

"The entire acts of violence, poll-related violations and all illegal acts in the (past) elections were engineered, instigated and executed by M K Alagiri, son of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi", the memorandum said.

Alagiri, who is leading the poll campaign for the DMK, "has taken undue advantage" of being Chief Minister's son and has taken "law into his hands", the party said.

"Alagiri is operating as an extra-constitutional authority ever since the DMK party came to power and hence his unlawful and illegal activities and his interference in poll process must be curbed by the EC," the party said adding that the Commission should ensure that Alagiri should not be permitted to enter the constituency.
