Qatar invites Arab states to Gaza emergency summit

Qatar is proposing to host an emergency Gaza summit and has sent out invitations to all 22 Arab League states to come to Doha on Friday.

But Egypt, which has been mediating between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas, is against the idea, as is Saudi Arabia, another regional heavyweight.

The Qatari official says only Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanon have so far officially accepted the invitation and confirmed attendance.

The official spoke over the telephone, on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Al-Jazeera Arabic TV reported that Syria's Bashar al-Assad was also attending.

Arabs are sharply divided over the crisis in Gaza and the Israeli offensive to rout out Hamas militants
